Antique Lamps, Historic Textiles, and Why They Matter
Why Antique Lamps and Historic Textiles Matter
We struggle to appreciate what we don’t understand. When I was young, I thought antiques were “silly.” I couldn’t imagine wanting anything that wasn’t as shiny and new as I perceived myself to be. As the years passed my perspective changed. Today, antiques constitute the majority of my most prized possessions.
Antique lamps are small pieces of history that continue to function exactly as they were intended. Many were made from solid metals, glass, and carefully cast components that were designed to survive daily use for decades. When a lamp like that is restored and used again, it becomes a reminder that ordinary household objects were once built with far greater durability and care.
Historic textiles are not ordinary materials. Many were made in small quantities, and some were produced by techniques that are no longer common. Lace, embroidered panels, and specialty silks were often created for garments, furnishings, or decorative household objects that were expected to last.
When pieces like these survive, they provide a glimpse into the kinds of materials people once lived with every day. The fibers, stitching, and structure reveal how much care and labor went into objects that today might be considered routine household items. Using historic textiles in a lampshade allows those materials to remain visible and functional rather than disappearing into storage or being discarded.
Old things are like old people. They are strong, wise, courageous, and tested. They have been through it all. Old people and old things have persevered through generations, trends, wars, natural disasters, and cultural change. They come from a better time, when things were made to last, quality mattered, and people taught their children that manners and kindness are important.
Antique items, including lamps, reflect how earlier generations valued the combination of design, beauty, and lasting functionality. I will remain one of those people who contribute to the preservation of quality items from the past. I will keep beautiful works of historic lighting and textile art out of landfills, no matter what the cost to restore them. Why? Because history and things that are old matter very, very much.
