A Guide to Measuring a Lampshade for a Replacement

Replacing a lampshade with a custom one can breathe new life into your favorite lamp and transform the ambiance of your space. However, obtaining the perfect fit requires accurate measurements. In this blog post, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to measure a lampshade for a replacement custom lampshade, ensuring a seamless and personalized result.

Determine the Style and Size

Before measuring your existing lampshade, determine the desired style and size for your replacement lampshade. Consider the shape, material, and design that would best complement your lamp and the overall aesthetic of your space.

Top Diameter

Center your measuring tape across the middle of the lampshade and take note of the width across. This one is 6.5 inches in diameter.

Bottom Diameter

Turn the lampshade upside down and measure the distance across from edge to edge. This shade is twelve inches wide in diameter.

Measure the Top and Bottom Diameter

To measure the top and bottom diameter of your existing lampshade, use a flexible measuring tape or a ruler. Place the measuring tape or ruler across the top opening of the lampshade and measure from one side to the other to determine the top diameter. Repeat the process for the bottom diameter.

Vertical Height

Here, you are measuring straight upward from the bottom shade wire to the top. This shade is 8.5 inches tall.

Measure the Vertical Height

Next, measure the vertical height of the lampshade. Start from the top edge and measure down to the bottom edge in a straight line. This measurement is crucial to ensure that your replacement lampshade is the appropriate height for your lamp.

Slant Height

Measure the outside distance of the lampshade along the slant of the shade, from rim to rim.

Measure the Slant Height (if applicable)

If your lampshade has a slanted or angled design, measure the slant height as well. This measurement is taken from the top edge of the lampshade along the slant to the bottom edge. It ensures that the replacement shade maintains the desired angle and proportion. For unique shaped replacement shades, this measurement is not necessary.

Consider the Fitter Type

Pay attention to the fitter type of your existing lampshade. The fitter refers to the attachment mechanism that connects the lampshade to the lamp. Common fitter types include spider, uno, clip-on, and screw-on. Take note of the fitter type, as it will determine the compatibility of your replacement lampshade. Take Accurate Measurements

Measuring with Accuracy

Use a rigid tape measure for best accuracy on vertical height and diameter, use a soft measuring tape for curves.

Ensure that your measurements are precise and accurate. Double-check your measurements to avoid any discrepancies. If possible, measure in both inches and centimeters to have the flexibility to work with different lampshade options notify y, and be certain to notify your maker if your measurements are in centimeters or inches.

Seek Expert Advice

If you are unsure about the measuring process or require assistance with custom replacement lampshades, it is advisable to consult an expert. Reach out to a lampshade designer, retailer, or artisan who specializes in custom lampshades. They can provide valuable guidance, suggest appropriate styles, and ensure a perfect fit.
